Perp Identified by DNA. 08/15/2007 Altemio Sanchez was sentenced to 75 years to life for the murder and rape of multiple victims and due to the statute of limitations he will never be prosecutes for the other rapes he committed.
I saw a press conference where the police stated that Sanchez had told an uncle he raped a woman right after the first rape he committed and they said he should of manned up and turned Sanchez in. But I say people are often conflicted when it comes to turning family members in for crimes they commit! I will even say that the worst crime committed morally was by the woman and the cops that pressured her to give false witness against another man and send him to jail for 22 years for a crime he didn't commit until cleared by Sanchez's DNA. The only reason in my opinion is you would miss identify someone is because of anger and rage and the want of vengeance. You want someone punished for what happened to you, even if its the wrong person that has to sit in jail the rest of his life.( Cops want a closed case and often pressure victims into falsely identifying the perp, prosecutors want a win and pressure victims also .) This is why I personally think that out of all the prohibited things in the bible and yes the 10 commandments this is the most damaging commandment to break.
Me, personally I would want justice for a crime committed against me. The right person identified and punished and or forgiven and or shown mercy by the victim and the judge and state depending on circumstances. If I where a cop or judge or prosecutor and I never showed any integrity or mercy or respect for truth and justice and only worried about my conviction rate, I would be worried about being judged by God Almighty in the end, if your a Christian and not getting a preferred room in Christ fathers house heaven, as a Jew a long time in purgatory or as a Muslim no virgins' in heaven for you, reincarnated as a dung beetle if your a Hindi, reincarnated and still seeking chi if your Buddhist, one of the 144,000 souls that will get into heaven if your latter day saints, I guess missing the mother ship with Rona L Huber on it if your scientologist, and just plain old going to hell if your a wicain, pagan, or hedonist the consequences most god fearing religions would condemn those practitioners too!
I am also going to examine that statement first by saying one thing: I think if a family member tells you that he committed a serious crime (anything less that premeditated murder or a sex crime against a child) and it is the first time they committed it you should tell the family member to seek professional and or religious help, not to do it again and consider turning themselves in. You should not participate in anyway in a cover up or concealment of the crime and if police come to your door you should answer there questions truthfully, but being a Christian (this is my take on Christ teachings: When asked how many times we should forgive our brother, or help our brother and then wash our hands of him? Seven or seventy? Christ replied, why set a number, do not set a number, you should always forgive and help your brother and never wash your hands of him). So, I would have to forgive a family member and give them another chance and not turn them in them for one incidence, but even though I would tolerate repeated minor misbehavior from a family member , I would not tolerate repeated violent criminal behavior from family members. Also, tell him if he does it again you will have no choice but to turn him into the police.
It is the same advice I have given to police on this web site about when it comes to dirty cops or cops doing something wrong, being abusive or committing crimes, your going to give your fellow officer in the law enforcement family the benefit of the doubt once or twice, but after that you should confront them and tell them to get professional help with their problem or your going to turn them in if they don't and don't stop. This should be true of minor offences too because there is a higher standard expected of law enforcement than the general public.
New studies have proven that post traumatic stress syndrome and traumatic events are remembered and not forgotten and relived in vivid detail because high doses of adrenalin that the body produces at time of event burns the event into the victims mind. Further studies now have show that taking drugs that block the effect of adrenaline while reliving the event by thinking of the event can actually diminish the memory, so by taking propranolol, such as metroprolol and Toprol Xl you can actually erase the events negative affects from your mind.
That said. If traumatic events and adrenaline lead to enhanced memory how do you explain Anthony Capozzi being locked up in jail for 22 yrs for 3 Rapes he didn't commit because the victims identified him as the one that attacked them. I look at the pictures from 22 yrs ago and one guy looks like a Latin Lover type and the other guy looks like a over weight Italian guy, their features are not even close besides hair color and dark skin. The only conclusion you can guess to be plausible is the witnesses lied out right or they where rail road into identifying Capozzi by the police and the prosecutors. Which do you think is more plausible? The 3 woman all had so much rage and malice in them that they all decided to id him not caring if the right guy was caught or they where all pressured into ID-ing the wrong man because the police and DA indicated that that's the guy we have all sorts of evidence but if you will ID him he won't get away with it (even if in the back of your mind you can be positive). This is what happens when you put getting a conviction above getting justice. I can probably believe them both equally plausible, that's why nobody should ever be locked up for life without definitive DNA evidence in addition to EYE witness testimony. Locking someone up for life or a death sentence should never be allowed on purely circumstantial evidence alone now a days. The DNA turns out to match suspected Bike Path Rapist and Killer Altemio Sanchez, and not Anthony Capozzi.
