Lets be honest folks when I grew up I was told the police man is my friend. The police man was their to help you and protect you from the criminals thus the term protect and serve. Well, I grew up and I know that's pretty simplistic, but a cop, police officer's employing police department is judged by the public as only as good as the lowest common denominator (police officer) which is the worst police officer, cop.

After 20 yrs in sales, the author of this web-site is a walking encyclopedia of first & second hand knowledge good and bad.

The Good...

Thanks to Technology( Amber alerts) and community policing and the smarts of a police officer who after identifying a car suspected in a kidnapping of a Little girl had the smarts to not try to interdict and confront the kidnaper and instead followed him allowing the kidnaper the opportunity to safely drop the little girl off near her parents house where another cop picked her up and brought to her relatives waiting arms. Little 4 year Serenity Platt is safe in her Mothers loving arms and the kidnaper was apprehended after a short chase.

Thanks to the actions of the police this girl may have a normal healthy child hood. This is a Good example of situational awareness on the part of the police, sometimes the hardest thing you can do is to take no action. Our basic instinct is to react especially when its a child's life a stake, but unless you see a weapon pointed at the child or the perp has shot someone else confrontation may not be the answer.

All involved in the search and recovery of the little girl should be commended.

Also, it is my belief that all police departments should have 24/7 video front view, rear view, and in police car front, and police car back seat with GPS recording with audio, and video not controlled by the police officer in the car. Neither should ever be shut off , and the memory unit should not be accessible to that officer either. They should be able to make copies from it, but never delete the original, this would protect police officer, police department, the public, and also last and least the criminals rights.

The Ugly!

I was watching the News WIVB.com when they did a story about our Erie county sheriff Howard having to arrest one of his own deputies on a sealed grand jury indictment, because this officer had been accused of sexually abusing a man the cop stopped. I don't know of this deputy is a man or a woman but this is one reason I say: (click here for rest of story)

What a stinking way to end a New Year shooting a mentally disturbed man dead. This happened on 12/31/2006. A Rookie Erie NY county sheriffs' deputy shot and killed a man after his partner was either knocked down or stumbled on uneven ground and a disturbed man came at him with a knife. They say that a man can cover 12 ft and stab you before you can draw your gun, so shooting someone dead when they only have a knife is an approved method by most police departments. But most police officers now sport bullet proof vest that are also resistant to knife penetration, so a baton, or another a less lethal method such as a tasser or pepper spray would have probably defused this situation( this is when you use these less than lethal options). You don't use them to subdue non- violent black woman mouthing of to you sitting in their car asking for your badge number (video). This person had a history with the cops and the experienced cop probably knew that and better. The kid freaked and shot the guy 3 times instead of one, he is not still in Iraq and while he might have been in his rights, I wouldn't be putting this guy back on the street anytime soon. They are saying 2 days, that ridiculous. He should go through some 2 or 3 months of consoling with a therapist and do indoor duty, maybe work with kids in Dare for a while, a little life affirming duty. This will assure his mental well being and the general publics safety, the guy might turn out to be a good cop that way.

New studies have proven that post traumatic stress syndrome and traumatic events are remembered and not forgotten and relived in vivid detail because high doses of adrenalin that the body produces at time of event burns the event into the victims mind. Further studies now have show that taking drugs that block the effect of adrenaline while reliving the event by thinking of the event can actually diminish the memory, so by taking propopanalol, such as metroprolol and Toprol Xl you can actually erase the events negative affects from your mind.

That said. If traumatic events and adrenaline lead to enhanced memory how do you explain Anthony Capozzi being locked up in jail for 22 yrs for 3 Rapes he didn't commit because the victims identified him as the one that attacked them. I look at the pictures from 22 yrs ago and one guy looks like a Latin Lover type and the other guy looks like a over weight Italian guy, their features are not even close besides hair color and dark skin. The only conclusion you can guess to be plausible is the witnesses lied out right or they where rail road into identifying Capozzi by the police and the prosecutors. Which do you think is more plausible? The 3 woman all had so much rage and malice in them that they all decided to id him not caring if the right guy was caught or they where all pressured into ID-ing the wrong man because the police and DA indicated that that's the guy we have all sorts of evidence but if you will ID him he won't get away with it (even if in the back of your mind you can be positive). This is what happens when you put getting a conviction above getting justice. I can probably believe them both equally plausible, that's why nobody should ever be locked up for life without definitive DNA evidence in addition to EYE witness testimony. Locking someone up for life or a death sentence should never be allowed on purely circumstantial evidence alone now a days. The DNA turns out to match suspected Bike Path Rapist and Killer Altemio Sanchez, and not Anthony Capozzi.
